This month, something incredible happened at Wave Community Bank. We hit a milestone that might not make headlines in the national papers, but for us, and for our community, it’s a huge deal – our loanbook officially reached £5 million.
Five million pounds. That’s a staggering number, especially for a community credit union like ours. But what’s even more significant than the number itself is what it represents. It’s five million pounds currently on loan to local people who needed to borrow to reach a goal or who might have been experiencing financial problems and needed help to manage life’s shocks.
The reasons people come to us are as varied as the people themselves. It could be the struggle to buy school uniforms for the start of a new term, a sudden and costly boiler breakdown, the need for a reliable car to travel to work or a home improvement project to help improve their living standards. Many have found themselves trapped in a cycle of high-interest credit card debt from predatory lenders, where the APRs are high and the path to freedom seems impossible.
Think about this for a moment: someone has a £1,000 loan with a jaw-dropping 1,200% APR. The interest payments alone are crippling, a constant drain on their already strained budget. When they come to us, we can often consolidate that debt and drop their APR to a manageable interest rate so they can get out of the debt cycle.
So, what do you think people do with that difference? With the money they no longer have to pay to high-interest lenders? The answer is beautiful in its simplicity and powerful in its impact.
They pay off their debts—not just to big companies, but to friends who helped them out in a pinch or to landlords to catch up on rent. But they also do something else, something that injects life and vibrancy back into our community.
They go to local butchers and farm shops to buy food for their families. They visit local stores to buy new clothes. They take their kids to local theatres, zoos and play centres in the holidays. That money, freed from the clutches of high-interest debt, doesn’t disappear into a void. It circulates right here, in our local area. It supports our grocers, our independent shops, and our local community spaces.
On the outside, we might look like a small, humble business (and we’ll remind you at every opportunity that we’re a not-for-profit!) but on the inside, we are something far bigger. We are a crucial cog in the engine of our local economy. We are a lifeline for people in crisis, and a catalyst for positive change.
Hitting £5 million in loans isn’t just a number for us. It’s a testament to the fact that five million pounds, when lent responsibly and with compassion, can ripple out and touch countless lives, making our community a better, more prosperous place to be for everyone.
