If you’re anything like my wife and I, we are delaying putting on the heating for as long as possible and are looking at ways to keep the house warm and one of the main changes we’ve done is closing doors and windows.

Most houses have large ceilings in the hall and landing to make way for the stairs and there’s really no need to keep this area warm as we’re not sitting there so we’ve started to close each of the doors to keep the heat in and it does seem to make a difference.

Another thing we’ve closed is all of the windows. During the summer months we tend to keep the windows on the latch, especially in the bathrooms but we’ve closed them all tight. We also have an afternoon routine of closing blinds and curtains when the sun goes down to keep any draughts out.

We’ve also got the warm jumpers and blankets out and as opposed to sitting in the evenings with the heating on we’ll either do the housework to keep on moving or sit comfortably with the blankets. And if we need to we have a fire which we have used to heat up one warm (with the doors closed) instead of the whole house.

We’re also getting the hot water bottles and it’s my job to put them in the beds about half an hour before going in to make sure that it’s not too cold. We’ve already changed the bed sheets to warm fleeces and that also helps too.

If you’re elderly or have any health conditions, it’s important to keep warm so no doubt when parents come to stay, we’ll have a change of plan but for now, these are some of the ways that we’re hoping to save money on our energy bills.
