Thousands of people across Kent miss out on life‑changing safety advice simply because they aren’t online. Many speak to only one person a week — a carer, neighbour, volunteer or family member. Teacher in Your Pocket (TEPO) is KCC’s innovative solution to reaching them.

TEPO is a collection of short, expert‑led videos that you can open on your phone and share in person with someone who may be vulnerable, isolated or digitally excluded. Each video takes just a few minutes to watch and is designed to spark a practical, supportive conversation. As TEPO says:
You become the messenger. The mobile phone becomes the teacher. Every time you share a TEPO video, you’re helping someone who isn’t online stay safe at home.

What is TEPO?

TEPO currently contains four practical modules designed to help people stay safe and well at home:

  • Say No to Doorstep Crime
  • Scams Awareness
  • Electrical Safety at Home
  • Help to Stop Smoking

These videos are made specifically for one‑to‑one sharing — simple, engaging, and perfect for anyone supporting a vulnerable resident who doesn’t have internet access.

Now fully accessible in British Sign Language (BSL)

Thanks to Crime Reduction Grant funding, all TEPO videos now include British Sign Language (BSL), alongside closed captions and linked transcripts. This ensures Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing residents can fully benefit from TEPO’s advice.

Why this matters

Deaf residents and digitally excluded people often miss critical safety advice – including information about scams, doorstep crime and home hazards. By combining TEPO’s one‑to‑one model with full BSL support, they are removing barriers and helping protect more people across Kent.

How to use TEPO

If you visit or support someone who isn’t online:

  1. Open the kent.gov.uk/TEPO page on your phone
  2. Choose a video
  3. Sit together and watch
  4. Talk about what it means for them

Just 10 minutes can change or even save a life.
