Why a Credit Union?

During the broadcast, Emma Norledge, Deputy CEO of Wave Community Bank, passionately discussed the Credit Union Movement and Wave Community Bank’s ongoing efforts to enhance the financial wellbeing of the local community. She explained the fundamental principles of credit unions and the benefits of membership with Wave Community Bank.

“So, anyone who lives or works in East Sussex, Brighton and Hove, Kent, and Medway can join us, save with us, and apply for loans with us. It’s all about people helping people,” Emma stated.

When asked why individuals might choose a credit union over traditional banks, Emma highlighted the inclusive and supportive nature of credit unions. She stated that there are people who can’t get credit from high street banks or have struggled before due to poor credit scores from life events like bereavement, relationship breakdowns, or job losses. She proceeded to say that these events can significantly impact credit scores, even after financial recovery. At Wave Community Bank, Emma stated that they consider these circumstances and are more likely to lend to those who are now financially stable.

Workplace Savings Scheme

The discussion also touched on Wave Community Bank’s active involvement in the business community and its employee engagement programs. Emma at this point spoke about Waves Workplace Savings Scheme, called Chorus, which they run with numerous businesses across East Sussex and Kent. Emma continued  “we would really like more employers to join us because what it is, is it’s a service that allows staff members to access savings and loans with us straight through their wages. And there’s a real benefit to that in that they’re going to get lower interest rates charges charged on their loans because we get the repayments at source, from the employer, it’s much less risk for us to lend to people.”
