I’ve always been a keen shopper and bargain hunter so always look at prices when I go shopping. This includes shopping online as well as bricks and mortar shopping.
I tend to buy my tins from a certain shop as they are generally cheaper there and do this online with free delivery and then I will go to another shop for fresh food as they are cheaper and generally I find better quality.
But another way to shop around to buy cheaper items is to look up and down on the shelves.
“Eye-level, Buy-level” is the phrase that I was taught as a child. This means that the food on the shelves in the supermarket are usually the ones that have the most profit for the shop so rather than buying the items that the retailer wants me to buy I also look up and down to see if there are any cheaper brands.
This is especially true when buying tinned food like beans and tomatoes. The cheaper brand is often on the bottom shelf and as I buy a lot of tinned tomatoes I can save quite a bit of money. My quick cooking tip is to use tinned tomatoes (which you can buy for around 30p) as a base for sauces as an alternative to buying jars of sauces which can be quite expensive. I then put my own herbs and spices in depending upon what I’m cooking. It’s also a lot healthier and you know exactly what’s gone into your cooking which is great for the fussy eater.
