Wave Community Bank was proud to participate in the East Sussex College Group (ESCG) Freshers Fairs held at the campuses in Eastbourne, Ore, Lewes, and Hastings. These lively and vibrant events marked the beginning of the academic journey for hundreds of new students.
Each campus hosted exciting activities over different days, ranging from mini golf, mechanical bull riding, virtual reality headsets and arcade machines to live animal encounters and beauty makeovers. Students were also able to explore valuable resources, including financial, sexual, mental health, and overall wellness support provided by local charities and services.
Among the organisations present, Wave Community Bank stood out as a key player in offering ethical financial services and support to the student community. As a credit union, our role in these events was not only to engage with students but to raise awareness of the importance of financial wellbeing. With the increasing cost of living and the challenges many students face when managing their finances, credit unions like Wave provide a safe, ethical, and community-focused alternative to mainstream financial institutions.
The Role of Credit Unions in Freshers Events
Participation in events like these Freshers Fairs is crucial for credit unions, especially when it comes to building connections with younger people. College students often face significant financial pressures—whether from living expenses, travel costs or managing part-time work alongside studies. Many students are unaware of the options available to them for affordable and responsible financial support.
By being present at these Freshers Fairs at the varied East Sussex College campuses, we were able to have meaningful conversations with students about the services we offer. Our aim was to educate students on the benefits of joining a credit union. Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are member-owned, meaning that our profits are reinvested back into the community and our members, rather than being used for shareholder dividends.
Why Student Engagement Matters
It’s essential to engage students in events like these, not just to promote our services but to foster a culture of financial literacy. Many students are managing their own money for the first time, and it can be difficult. Attending these Freshers Fairs provided the perfect platform to introduce East Sussex students to financial tools that promote responsible money management.
Engagement at the Freshers Fairs isn’t just about handing out leaflets; it was about actively listening to the needs of students. Many students we spoke to expressed concern about managing money while studying, and we were able to provide practical advice on how to save, budget, and avoid financial pitfalls. Our goal was to demystify the financial world for them, making it clear that credit unions are here to support them.
The Benefits of Joining a Credit Union for Students
Being part of a credit union offers numerous benefits for students. Additionally, as a member of Wave, students can start saving from as little as £1. This encourages the habit of saving and financial resilience from a young age. In a world where many financial institutions are focused on profits, Wave Community Bank prioritise the wellbeing of our members, making us an effective resource for students looking for ethical financial solutions.
Building Financial Resilience in East Sussex and Kent
Our participation in these Freshers Fairs is part of our broader mission to build financial resilience in East Sussex and Kent. Credit unions like Wave are deeply rooted in the communities they serve, and events like these allow us to reach individuals who might otherwise not know about the services available to them. Financial resilience is about more than just managing day-to-day expenses; it’s about equipping people with the tools to handle financial emergencies and plan for their futures.
Many students face mental health challenges linked to financial stress, and being part of a credit union can alleviate some of that burden. Knowing they have access to fair, ethical financial products and support can make a significant difference in a student’s wellbeing, allowing them to focus more on their studies and personal development.
Looking Ahead
As we continue our work in East Sussex and Kent, events like the East Sussex College Freshers Fairs remain a vital part of our outreach. We’re committed to engaging with the community, spreading the message of financial inclusion, and helping students make informed decisions about their finances.
By promoting ethical financial practices and offering accessible services, Wave Community Bank is here to support students at every step of their academic journey and beyond. We look forward to continuing to help the next generation build strong, resilient financial futures.
