We are proud to have been part of the East Sussex College Group Freshers’ Fairs over the last few weeks, visiting campuses in Eastbourne, Ore, Lewes, and Hastings. These events are always such a great way to kick off the academic year, welcoming new students to college life with plenty of energy, fun, and support.
Each campus put on something different – from mini golf and mechanical bull rides to live animals and arcade machines – creating a buzzing and memorable start for students. Alongside the entertainment, the fairs also gave students the chance to connect with charities, local organisations, and support services covering everything from mental health and wellbeing to financial guidance.
Why We Were There
For us its was all about starting important conversations with young people about money. College is often the first time many students are managing their own finances, and it can feel overwhelming. From budgeting tips to savings accounts and affordable loans, we wanted to show students that there are safe, ethical, and community-focused options available through their local credit union.
We also took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the Stop Loan Sharks campaign. Sadly, illegal money lenders often target young people who may feel under financial pressure and don’t yet know where to turn for help. By raising awareness of the signs of loan shark activity and talking openly about the risks, we hope to empower students to make safer choices if they ever need financial support.
A Fun and Engaging Few Weeks
Our time at the Freshers’ Fairs wasn’t just about handing out leaflets, it was about chatting with students, listening to their concerns, and offering practical guidance. We heard from many who were already worried about juggling their finances alongside studying, and it was rewarding to be able to give guidance that could help them feel more in control.
And of course, the atmosphere was brilliant. The events were lively, entertaining, and well organised, a credit to the East Sussex College Group team who worked so hard to make them happen. We’re grateful for the chance to be involved and to play a small part in helping students start their year on the right foot.
Building Resilience for the Future
Wave Community Bank is all about building financial resilience in East Sussex, Kent, and Medway and Bexley. Engaging with young people at events like these helps us spread the word that there is an alternative to high-interest lenders, and that financial wellbeing is something everyone can work towards even as a student.
We’ll continue to get out into the community, meeting people where they are and sharing the benefits of credit union membership. For us, it’s about more than money, it’s about giving people the tools, knowledge, and support to make confident financial decisions.
