Hidden just behind the Beacon Centre near Eastbourne train station lies a true treasure for the community – the William and Patricia Venton Centre, home of Age Concern Eastbourne. This independent charity is dedicated to supporting the elderly residents of Eastbourne and its surrounding areas, offering vital services, activities, and companionship to those who need it most.
Our very own Business Development Officer, Jason Smith, recently paid a visit to the centre to see their incredible work first-hand. Jason was warmly greeted by John Trainor, Chief Executive of Age Concern Eastbourne, who shared the charity’s achievements from 2024 and their ambitious plans for 2025 before giving him a tour of the facilities. What initially seemed like a modest building quickly revealed itself to be a treasure trove of resources, wellness rooms, and spaces designed to foster connection and joy for the elderly.
A Hub of Support and Connection
The William and Patricia Venton Centre offers a wide array of services and activities. From advice sessions to social gatherings, the centre is a haven for older residents of Eastbourne. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea and cake in their modern café, participating in a quiz, trying Tai Chi or Pilates, or simply having a friendly chat, there is something for everyone.
Their day club runs five days a week, creating a welcoming environment for socialising, reminiscing, and forming new friendships. The centre also provides invaluable support through its free Information and Advice service, helping elderly individuals navigate queries around benefits, housing, health, and local resources.
In addition to these services, the centre offers nail care, chiropody, and even a hair salon, ensuring that residents not only feel good but look good too. The wide range of activities includes beachfront walks, dancing sessions, exercise classes, chess, Scrabble, and more. There is truly something to suit every interest and ability. John Trainor stated:
“We are proud of the range and variety of what we do at the charity but much of it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our team of committed volunteers, And we are always on the lookout for more, be that volunteer drivers, passenger assistants, advice workers and people to help out in our shops”
