Do the summer holidays fill you with dread about how you will be able to afford all of the activities for the family and demands from the kids on how they want to be entertained for the 6 weeks without school?

We know that with the rising costs of food, energy and transport it’s going to be more of a financial struggle for many families so we’ve come up with 6 tips on how you can not only save money over the summer holidays but also make some of those chores fun for the kids at the same time teaching them the importance of money – a skill that they will need to take up to adulthood.

  1. Upcycling – are there any toys, games or bric-a-brac in your home that you could improve and upcycle so that someone else in the family could enjoy it?
  2. Selling unwanted items – is there anything in your home that you haven’t used for the last 12 months and therefore don’t need? There’s an array of websites such as ebay, vinted that make it easy to do this.
  3. Money-free days – why not plan some money-free days and look at fun ways you can have with the family without spending any money such as playing in the park, or going to the library? You may find that you’ve not been to some places.
  4. Pocket money – if you’re able to give them an allowance at the beginning of the summer holiday and help them to budget by making it fun to count money.
  5. Rewards – how about playing a fun game of bingo and either give money or treats as a reward? You can download our template here to help you play.
  6. Cooking – plan some cooking experiment days where you all have to cook a meal or bake a cake from whatever is in the fridge or cupboard and have taster sessions to see what is favourite.

If you need more help to get through the summer holidays then there are charities like Foodbank that can help with emergency food supplies. There is also our Money Helper section where you can seek advice and support locally.

Don’t forget that we can help you with buying your school uniforms and any equipment they may need when they start back at school. Find out more about our Ethical Family Saver Loans here that also help you to save money each week or month.
