Money Advice Charity Step Change, have warned that money borrowed to pay for Christmas could take years to repay.

January can be a hard month for many families as the Christmas bills come in but with the rising cost of living on top and high energy costs when a freeze is expected, 2023 is looking more glum than usual which is why Wave Community Bank, who provide ethical alternative financial service, are encouraging people to start saving for Christmas 2023 as opposed to get into further debt.

One of the best ways to save for Christmas is by opening a Wave Save Account and create a Christmas goal. It’s really easy to set up and once you have joined you can manage it all on the mobile app.

You just need to create a goal by deciding how much you need for next Christmas and the app will then tell you how much you need to save each month. For example if I need to raise £2,000 by December the app shows me that I need to save £187 a month.

Once you’ve created your goal then the most convenient way to save is to arrange it via your work payroll to get paid into your WCB account as that way you are more likely to save and if you do need to take out a loan to cover any further costs you can also benefit from cheaper interest rates if you pay it back through your salary. You can find out more about our savings and loans through payroll on the Chorus website here: www.savewithchorus.org.uk.
