Mental Health Awareness Week (11–17 May 2026) is one of the UK’s biggest public health campaigns, bringing people together to focus on improving mental wellbeing and reducing stigma.
This year’s theme is “Action”, with a simple but powerful message: every action counts.
It’s a reminder that while awareness is important, real change happens when we take small, practical steps to support ourselves and those around us. As the Mental Health Foundation highlights, even small actions can help us feel more hopeful and less overwhelmed.
At Wave Community Bank, we see every day how these small actions – particularly around financial wellbeing – can make a real difference.
Why small actions matter at work
Workplaces have a significant influence on our mental health. Poor mental health remains one of the biggest causes of absence in the UK, affecting individuals, teams and organisations alike.
But improving workplace wellbeing doesn’t always require large-scale change. Often, it’s the small, consistent actions that have the biggest impact:
- Creating a supportive culture
- Encouraging open conversations
- Providing access to practical help
- Reducing everyday stress where possible
The Mental Health Foundation highlights the importance of taking practical steps to support wellbeing, whether at home, in communities, or in the workplace.

The link between money and mental health
One of the most common – and often hidden – causes of stress is money.
Financial worries can affect sleep, concentration and confidence, and often follow people into the workplace. Over time, this can impact both mental health and productivity.
The connection is clear: when people feel financially secure, they are better able to cope with life’s challenges. When they don’t, stress can quickly build.
That’s why taking action on financial wellbeing is such an important part of supporting mental health at work.
Turning awareness into action with employers
This year’s theme of Action is about doing something practical – and that’s exactly what Wave Community Bank helps employers to achieve.
Through our Chorus Workplace Savings Scheme, we support employers to take simple, meaningful steps that help their teams feel more secure and supported.
These include:
- Helping employees save directly from their wages
- Providing access to affordable, ethical loans
- Offering budgeting and money management support
- Creating safe spaces for people to talk about financial worries
These are not complicated solutions – but they are powerful actions that can reduce stress and improve wellbeing across the workplace.
Personal support that makes a difference
Sometimes, the most impactful action is simply taking the time to support someone directly.
Wave Community Bank has a full-time Financial Wellbeing Support Officer known as ‘Money Tracy‘, working within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, helping staff across hospital sites with:
- Personal budgeting
- Money management
- Access to affordable financial services
During Mental Health Awareness Week, Tracy is also supporting wider wellbeing activity across the Trust. This includes taking part in internal communications, contributing to an online wellbeing event, and joining in with Wear it Green Day to help raise awareness and encourage conversations around mental health.
While larger events may take place later in the month, it’s often these smaller, visible actions that help remind people that support is there when they need it.
This one-to-one support empowers people to take control of their finances – a small step that can lead to a significant improvement in mental health.

Every action counts
Mental Health Awareness Week reminds us that we don’t need to have all the answers to make a difference.
A conversation. A budgeting plan. A small step towards saving. Access to fair financial support.
These are all actions that matter.
Because when it comes to mental health, it’s often the small actions, taken consistently, that lead to the biggest change.
At Wave Community Bank, we’re proud to work alongside employers to turn awareness into action – helping people feel more financially secure, more supported, and better able to thrive both in and out of work.
