Mental Health Awareness Week is from 13th -19th May, 2024 this year and it is paramount to acknowledge the symbiotic relationship between financial stability and mental well-being. This year’s theme, “Movement: Moving more for our mental health,” urges us to explore how proactive financial management can significantly impact our psychological resilience. At Wave Community Bank, we stand committed to helping individuals cultivate confidence in their financial decisions, recognising the profound implications for their mental health.

Research conducted in the UK underscores the intrinsic connection between financial wellbeing and mental health. According to a study by the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, financial difficulties can exacerbate mental health issues, with 72% of people experiencing mental health problems reporting that their financial situation worsened as a result. Furthermore, the Royal College of Psychiatrists highlights the reciprocal relationship between mental health problems and financial difficulties, emphasising the need for integrated support systems to address both issues simultaneously.

Here’s how individuals can leverage the support of credit unions like ours, to foster financial empowerment and enhance their mental wellbeing:

  1. Accessible Financial Guidance: Credit unions offer personalised financial guidance tailored to individual needs. Through our Wellbeing Webinars and Money Guides, members can learn more about the importance of looking after their money along with practical tips on managing budgets and saving money.  By developing a clearer understanding of their financial situation and options, individuals can alleviate stress and enhance their sense of control over their finances, contributing to improved mental health outcomes.
  2. Tailored Financial Solutions: With our Workplace Savings Scheme, we help employees access lower loan rates and flexible savings accounts, which take the burden away from managing repayments. Research published by the Financial Conduct Authority highlights the positive impact of affordable credit on mental wellbeing, emphasizing the importance of access to fair and transparent financial services. By offering ethical and accessible financial solutions, credit unions empower individuals to address financial challenges without resorting to high-cost borrowing, thereby reducing financial stress and anxiety.
  3. Community Support Networks: Like all credit unions Wave Community Bank fosters a sense of community, providing opportunities for peer support and social connection. Research from the University of Oxford suggests that social support networks play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of financial strain on mental health. Through our work supporting our members including attending NHS Trusts, Bus Depots and online Wellbeing Webinars we facilitate collaboration and mutual assistance, fostering resilience and belonging among members.
  4. Empowerment Through Education: Financial education is key to building confidence and competence in managing money effectively. At Wave Community Bank we have a range of educational resources on our website to enhance members’ financial literacy skills. According to research by the Money Advice Service, individuals who receive financial education demonstrate greater confidence in their financial decision-making abilities, leading to reduced anxiety and stress. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools to navigate financial challenges, credit unions empower them to proactively address their financial wellbeing and mental health.

During Mental Health Awareness Week and beyond, Wave Community Bank remains dedicated to supporting our members on their journey towards financial and mental wellness. By leveraging the resources and assistance available through credit unions, individuals can cultivate resilience, confidence, and peace of mind in managing their finances, thereby promoting positive mental health outcomes. Together, let’s embark on a path of financial empowerment and holistic well-being.
