“Put a Jumper On” seems to be the most used phrase in our house at the moment and teaching the kids the importance of seeking other ways to keep warm as opposed to just turning up the thermostat is now the way to go.
I didn’t grow up with central heating and remember having to go to bed with blankets and coats on top just to keep warm was something we just did. When I see our kids just leisurely walking towards the thermostat to up it’s heat without blinking an eye, has led me to teach them new ways of keeping warm.
So jumpers are the new look in our house and the more oversized ones you can get the better. It does mean of course that if you’re the tallest member of the house you do lose half of your wardrobe but as long as everyone keeps warm that’s the main thing.
Like many of you, we’re concerned about how we’re going to pay our energy bill with yet another price hike in October and are doing what we can to stop overusing or wasting heat, so in a way, we are going back to our childhood and taking our kids with us – kicking and screaming – as they learn some harsh lessons on what life was like for many of us growing up in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Another tip about keeping warm is wearing socks and gloves, as these are often the first to get cold. So instead of turning on the heating to warm up your feet, we’ve instead turned to wear bed socks and slippers in the daytime along with layers to keep warm. They aren’t expensive to buy and I have a feeling that they may be on everyone’s Christmas list this year – I’ll certainly be putting a pair in each of the kid’s stockings this year and the more colourful designs the better for cheering everyone up on a cold winter morning.
