Many people would agree that it is important to talk to an older relative about money, and what happens if they are no longer able to live at home. However, very few people have actually had the conversation. Talk Money week is all about getting that discussion started, so that you’re prepared for the future.

We understand that this conversation may be an incredibly difficult one to have, and it will be difficult to leave emotions out of things. The most important thing is getting started, so you could begin the conversation by saying what you would like when you’re older. This allows the conversation to be inclusive and creates a safe space to talk. Try and keep things general to begin with, and discuss the experiences of other people relating to care.

Perhaps you could ask how your relative envisions their end of life care, and if they have the finances to achieve this. It is important to have this conversation early, before they are in need or urgent care, because they may not otherwise get their wishes with what’s available at that point, and it will be much more stressful for all involved.

It is never too late to start breaking down the taboo and talking about money. Talking about money promotes financial wellbeing and prepares us all for the future. Get the conversation started today, and get involved on social media by sharing your experiences with the hashtag #TalkMoney.
